As a busy Mom of two, it is very hard sometimes to find time to exercise. As a child I did ballet, and later on modern dance for many years. A little bit over a decade ago I discovered Yoga and practiced it every day with great passion.
When I got pregnant with Liam, my first son 9 years ago i continued my practice, and as my pregnancy progressed i switched to prenatal yoga. Unfortunately around 7months into the pregnancy, I was put on a semi bedrest, and had to stop all forms of exercise due to very frequent contractions. In the last 3 months I gained an unhealthy amount of weight.
Everyone told me not to worry, breastfeeding will help me loose the weight, well it was not the case for me. I actually gained more weight. As baby was breech I had to have a c-section, and I spent most of my time sitting on the couch nursing and snacking for the first few weeks.
After about 6 months break it was very difficult to get back to a healthy routine, and leave my new baby even for a few hours, but with switching back to a 100% vegan diet, and combining yoga classes with brisk walks, I was on the way back to my healthy weight. I actually didn’t return to my pre-baby body until I stopped breast feeding Liam, when he was a little over 2 years old.
My second pregnancy was very different, I had “all day sickness” and the only thing that helped my nausea was hiking outdoors, so I didn’t gain any weight until I was about 20 weeks pregnant. I continued to hike every single day 5-6 miles until the day i went into labor. Kai, my second baby, was born naturally so I was back to a light exercise routine, and brisk walks a little over a week after giving birth. Just recently, I started to practice yoga again as well.
This is all possible for me because I have a great support system around me. I take a 6:30am yoga class that leaves my husband to get my older one ready, and drop him at school, while juggling a toddler all by himself. On the days he can’t take Liam, after I drop him off I go for a walk/run with the stroller, or when I have my Nanny go for a longer hike in the hills close to our house.
I also try to keep a plant based diet low in sugar, and fats, though to be honest I do get tempted every once in a while, I just can’t say no to a good croissant or delicious baked good, or cake. I do try to make them at home mostly, so I know what is in it.
On the weekends we spend a lot of time outdoors as a family, go to the beach, ride bikes, or go hiking. Our boys absolutely love being outside. It takes a lot of effort to find time, and energy to work out, but it is so worth it and you will never think at the end of the day, I wish I didn’t exercise today!
